Ionia ó Sparrow Health System is replacing its decades-old hospital in Ionia with a new, $25 million facility.
The health system says itís the first new hospital in mid-Michigan in decades. The two-story hospital will have 22 beds and expanded emergency, surgery and outpatient services. It will replace the current 25-bed downtown Sparrow Ionia Hospital, which was built in 1953.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday at the 44-acre site, located south of the Ionia County Airport. Itís scheduled to open in spring 2015.
The Lansing State Journal reports Sparrow officials havenít decided what will become of the current hospital building. The 260 employees at the current hospital are expected to transfer to the new facility. Sparrow Health Systemís flagship hospital is in Lansing.
