Zoie Jackson )
Four days after a 5-year-old Detroit girl went missing, authorities found her unharmed 1,300 miles away in northwest Texas on Thursday with her mother.
Detroit police were informed at 7:30 p.m. that Zoie Jackson was recovered and her mother, Carmela Jackson, 37, was taken into custody in Dickens, Texas, a small city of just more than 300 residents.
County law enforcement pulled over Jackson in a black 2002 Lexus for “erratic driving,” and learned the vehicle was wanted in connection with a child abduction.
Jackson, diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disease and post-partum depression, was taken into police custody without incident.
Zoie is being cared for by Child Protective Services until her family can pick her up from Texas, police said.
Detroit police said Jackson picked up Zoie from Detroit Community Schools on Monday. Jackson, who is only allowed supervised visits, did not have permission to remove Zoie from school.
“I just her want her returned safely,” grandmother Katrina Appling said Tuesday.
