Westland— An accident inside the service bay of a gas station caused a major fire that left the structure in ashes Monday.
Emergency crews with the Wayne Westland Fire Association responded to a Citgo station at the corner of Ann Arbor Trail and Middlebelt just before 11:40 a.m. The station sits at the southwest corner of the intersection, with several other businesses nearby.
“Their mechanic was working on a vehicle and removing the fuel tank,” said John Adams, assistant fire chief with Wayne Westland. “It dropped, released gas and a spark ensued. We had ignition of vapors from the gasoline.”
The mechanic and two other employees at the station escaped unharmed, but the building was destroyed. Firefighters had the blaze contained within an hour.
