The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday will announce formal charges for a driver accused of killing a 64-year-old St. Clair woman in a car accident Saturday.
The driver, a 39-year-old Clinton Township man, was traveling southbound on Groesbeck Highway in a 2004 Ford conversion van when he struck the woman, who was traveling eastbound in a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser, at the intersection of Groesbeck at Cass Avenue in Mount Clemens at 7:19 a.m.
Witnesses say the man disregarded the red traffic signal and collided with the PT Cruiser, sheriff’s deputies said. The woman was instantly killed while the man was taken to McLaren Macomb Hospital.
Deputies say the man had been consuming alcohol and has two prior convictions for operating while intoxicated. A search warrant was prepared to draw blood for analysis, the sheriff’s office said.
He remains in custody and under hospital guard.
