When Cate Blanchett was named best actress at Sunday’s British Academy Film Awards, the “Blue Jasmine” star chose to take her time at the podium to honor her friend, actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died of an apparent heroin overdose earlier this month. “Phil, your monumental talent, your generosity and your unflinching quest for the truth both in art and in life will be missed by not only me but by so many people not only in this room and in the industry but the audiences who loved you so dearly,” said Blanchett, who starred with Hoffman in 1999’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” “You raised the bar continually so very, very high. Phil, buddy, this is for you. ... Hope you’re proud.” Other big winners at the BAFTA were “12 Years a Slave,” which won for best film and Chiwetel Ejiofor for best actor, and “Gravity,” which was named outstanding British film, and Alfonso Cuaron for best director, as well as several technical awards.

Rosie Perez dishes in new memoir

Actor and dancer Rosie Perez reveals details of her life in her new book, which has a title as big as her personality. In “Handbook for an Unpredictable Life: How I Survived Sister Renata and My Crazy Mother, and Still Came Out Smiling (with Great Hair),” Perez writes about growing up with a mentally ill mother and her early years in television and films. According to CocoaFab.com, a snippet in the book reveals Perez’s rocky relationship with Jennifer Lopez, who worked under Perez on “In Living Color.” (J.Lo was a fly-girl dancer and Perez was the show’s choreographer.) Perez writes how the other dancers complained about Lopez being manipulative, and how their relationship deteriorated from there. Read the details when “Handbook for an Unpredictable Life” comes out Feb. 25.
