Indianapolis ó The Lions got some salary cap relief Thursday without having to release any players or renegotiate any contracts.
As first reported by ESPN, the NFL salary cap is expected to increase to $130 million. Teams had been working with a projected number of $126 million. The extra $4 million puts the Lions roughly $7 million under the cap.
They now have enough cap space to sign their 2014 draft class, but they will need to clear more space if they want to be buyers on the free agent market.
They could clear significant space by working out an extension with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who presently occupies $22.4 million of cap space. Negotiations have yet to take place because Suh is in the process of hiring an agent, reportedly Jay Zís Roc Nation, to represent him in contract talks.
