Thursday's high schools roundup: Macomb Dakota girls come up big without leading scorer

Macomb Dakota’s seniors went out with a bang Thursday night, leading the team to a 46-37 girls basketball victory over visiting St. Clair Shores Lakeview in their final regular-season game.

Olga Caruso led Dakota (9-11) with a career-high 29 points on senior night as the seniors stepped up in the absence of star player Rio Dudgeon, who was out with a 102-degree fever.

“That was her best effort in her career,” Dakota coach Phil McCune said. “She was really motivated by the fact it was senior night, and with the kind of game she had, she propelled us to the top.”

Dakota was up by 11, the biggest lead of the night, before Lakeview managed to cut its deficit to four early in the fourth quarter.

“We took over the game at that point,” McCune said. “We were missing our best player. She’s usually our go-to player, but the seniors stepped up and played some of their best basketball.”

Caruso added 11 rebounds and five steals.

Leah Charrette scored 17 for Lakeview (6-14).

Dakota will face Port Huron Northern Monday in the first round of the district playoffs.
