'Truth Parties' offer ways to maintain relationships

Men and women experiencing difficulty with relationships can learn ways to work through their problems at “Truth Parties 4 Relationships,” a monthly series of social gatherings presented by Watson Financial Group and hosted by Dearborn-based family and relationships expert Nneka J. Owens. The next “party” is set for Friday.

This is the sixth year Owens, a licensed professional counselor for more than 10 years,

has hosted “Truth 4 Relationships” parties, which include two professional actors performing a script that centers around everyday dating scenarios.

“Truth Parties are an extension of my private practice. I was inspired to do the truth parties because so many people know how to get into relationships, but they don’t know how to manage them,” Owens says. “I see so many people at a crossroad and they don’t know how to work through those difficult spaces or places in relationships. Some people have been in so many failed relationships and are looking for an environment where they won’t be judged. They’re looking for some type of education.”

Owens’ choice of work stems, in part, from her childhood.

“Growing up, I didn’t really have any role models. My parents divorced when I was very young. I had a wonderful mom and dad, but they didn’t know how to manage their relationship. I thought divorce was hereditary. I never saw couples work through their problems and really be committed,” says the “happily married” mother of three.

Owens says, the “intimate” social mixer is attended by individuals who are either single or married and wanting to discover ways to make their relationship work.

In addition to her private practice, Owens has worked as a couples therapist for the TV series “Unfaithful: Stories for Betrayal” on the OWN Network. She’s also a regular guest on WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) and WCHB-AM radio, sharing advice for couples wanting help managing their relationships.

The “Truth Parties 4 Relationships” costs $20 per person and includes dinner. Space is limited. To RSVP, visit truthparty4relationships.com or call Owen’s office at (313) 769-5705.
