Shelby Township — Investigators with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office are ending their search Monday evening at Stony Creek Metropark for a young man believed to have drowned Sunday.

“They’re wrapping it up and they’re going to be back out there in the morning,” said Macomb County Sheriff’s Lt. John Michalke.

Malcolm Robert Fairley, a 21-year-old Pontiac resident, disappeared from sight after jumping from a paddle boat just after 6 p.m. Three friends were with him, but they were unable to retrieve him.

“He jumped into the lake and resurfaced a few moments later,” Michalke said. “He seemed to be gasping for breath and then went back down. He was not seen again.”

Officials with Huron-Clinton Metroparks responded first to the scene, and then called in dive teams from local law enforcement.

Investigators have not said why Fairley may have jumped into the water.
