Traverse City meeting to discuss shooting ranges

Traverse City State and local officials are hosting a public meeting Tuesday to discuss alternative locations for shooting ranges near Traverse City that have drawn complaints from area residents.

The shooting area is informally known as Hoosier Valley, about 15 miles from town. It has become popular with a variety of gun enthusiasts, including those using semi-automatic firearms.

People living nearby have raised concerns about noise, safety, road congestion and litter.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has drafted interim rules on matters such as shooting hours and permissible targets while a new location is sought.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center. Officials will discuss three alternative sites on state-managed land. All are in outlying townships and within a half-hours drive of Traverse City.
