Two basketball players from U-D Jesuit -- big men Gregory Eboigbodin and Eke Donatus Ikechukwu -- are transferring to West Bloomfield. A third Cubs player, guard Billy Thomas, wrote on Twitter that he was transferring to Genesis Academy in Lynchburg, Va.
Thomas helped U-D win the Catholic League title this past season and reach the Class A semifinals for the first time in school history.
Both Eboigbodin and Ikechukwu are 6-8 and are originally from Nigeria. They came to the United States in the summer of 2013, enrolled at U-D and were expected to play basketball on varsity. Instead the Michigan High School Athletic Association ruled that both were ineligible to compete in athletics for the 2014-15 school year.
All three are expected to be eligible for the 2014-15 school year. Thomas will be a junior in the fall. The Nigerians will be sophomores.
Thomas originally planned to transfer to West Bloomfield, as well.
West Bloomfield boys basketball coach Jeremy Denha said Thomas and Eboigbodin have practiced with the team and this past weekend competed with the West Bloomfield team at the Izzo Shootout in East Lansing.
“Greg has looked good in practice,” Denha said. “He’s shown us some good post moves.”
West Bloomfield started three sophomores last season, including 6-2 Tristan Jackson, a Division I recruit.
U-D basketball coach Pat Donnelly had no comment on the matter.
