Muggy conditions extend to evening with severe thunderstorm threat for region

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Calhoun County in south central Michigan and eastern Kalamazoo County in southwest Michigan until 11:30 p.m.

The weather service in Grand Rapids said severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Richland to Mendon and moving east at 45 mph. The storms have wind gusts of 60 mph.

Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 2 a.m. for five counties in northern lower Michigan: Arenac, Ogemaw, Gladwin, Roscommon and Iosco, according to the weather services Gaylord office.

In Union, spotters reported trees and power lines down south of town, according to the Grand Rapids office of the weather service.

Southeast Michigan is expected to see thunderstorms after 1 a.m.

Theres a chance the storms heading east could be severe, with potential winds of 70 mph and rainfall amounts between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch, the weather service said.

Temperatures overnight could hover in the 70s, then rise into the upper 80s on Tuesday.

More storms could roll through the area then, as well. The weather service forecasts a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms and wind gusts as high as 24 mph.

The conditions wont be much different from Monday, when the thermometer reached 87 degrees at Detroit Metro Airport after a morning low of 72. High humidity made afternoon temperatures feel closer to 90.

The weather for the upcoming Fourth of July weekend should be more accommodating, meteorologist Dave Gurney said.

Cool air should be back in the area by mid-week through Friday, he said.
