Justin Verlander turned in his third consecutive quality start as the Tigers beat the A's 9-3 and completed a three-game sweep at Comerica Park.

* Victor Martinez, who has side discomfort, is not in the starting lineup for the third consecutive game. J.D. Martinez is again hitting cleanup behind Miguel Cabrera and is playing right field. Torii Hunter is the designated hitter and is batting fifth.

* J.D. Martinez had two more hits (double, home run) Tuesday night to lift his season average to .317. He has multiple hits in five of his last eight games.

* The Tigers are 46-34 and reach the 81-game midpoint of the season Wednesday. The Tigers will have their best midseason record since 2007, when they were 47-34 after 81 games.

* Wednesday’s starter, Justin Verlander, has got back on track his last two starts, but has a pair of no-decisions. Combined in the starts against the Indians and Astros he pitched 13 innings with 11 hits, five earned runs and 16 strikeouts.
