A few tips for Fourth of July travelers

They say nothing is faster than the speed of light but theyre wrong: the one thing speedier than the speed of light is a Michigan summer.

I cant believe it but its already the Fourth of July. Here are a few things you should know for the holiday weekend.

The Detroit People Mover will operate on abbreviated hours Friday, running from 2 p.m. until 12:30 a.m.

The People Mover hours for the Tiger home games on July 5 and 6 will be from noon until midnight. Standard operating hours (6:30 a.m. until midnight Monday through Friday) will resume on July 7.

Let the Dance of Joy begin!

The Road Commission for Oakland County has announced the early reopening of a section of Avon between Crooks and Livernois in Rochester Hills.

The RCOC has been resurfacing the road, which was expected to reopen some time next week. The next step is to close Avon between Livernois and Adams so it too can be resurfaced.

The entire project is expected to be completed in September.

Listen up motorcycle riders, this concerns you: According to a study by Progressive Insurance, July 5-7 is the worst three-day period of the entire year for motorcycle crashes and claims.

The study which covered 2009-13 found that July 6 is the the No. 1 day of the year for motorcycle accidents and claims.

It also found that July overall also had the greatest number of motorcycle crashes. The day of the week that garnered the most claims and crashes? Monday.

Actually it makes a lot of sense. Summer weather, three-day holiday, the call of the road...

I did a little research, and according to the injury prevention website, the July 4th holiday weekend is also the worst period for motor vehicle crashes.

Just in case youre wondering, statistically the safest day to ride a motorcycle is Dec. 27 hoping in Michigan the roads are clear of ice and snow.
