Penske Logistics said this week it will close a Riverview site and lay off nearly 200 workers after losing a bid to provide transportation services for Ford Motor Co.
In a federally-required notice filed with the state of Michigan, Penske said it will close its location at 17950 Dix Toledo Road in September, and will lay off 183 employees. About 161 workers there are represented by UAW Local 600.
Penske Logistics is the lead logistics provider for Ford’s North American operations. Alan Beljin, a public relations manager for Penske Logistics, said the Riverview site is a small piece of the company’s overall partnership with Ford.
“They’re generally pretty happy with us,” he said.
Penske Logistics is a subsidiary of Pennsylvania-based Penske Truck Leasing Co., a partnership between Penske Automotive, Penske Corp. and GE Capital. It has locations in Asia, Europe, North and South America and employs more than 10,000 globally.
Beljin said the 161 union employees are expected to be transferred to the new provider. A spokesman for Local 600 could not be immediately reached for comment.
Penske Logistics is working to find the remaining 22 non-union employees “alternative employment” with the company locally, Beljin said.
