Man dead after Upper Peninsula chase, shooting

Munising — Authorities say a man is dead following a police chase, crash and shooting in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

The Mining Journal of Marquette and WLUC-TV report the crash and shooting happened Monday following an altercation and roughly 10-minute pursuit by police in Munising.

Police said Tuesday that 47-year-old Timothy Mitchell was shot by the officer and pronounced dead at the scene in Alger County. Authorities were working to determine whether the crash or shooting caused his death.

The altercation was reported in a nearby community and police in Munising had spotted the vehicle in the case. State police are investigating. The Munising police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation takes place.
