Planet Lori Art Camp designed for kids dealing with a parent's cancer

Lori Haber Buckfire of Bloomfield Hills had just had her first child, Hayden, when she got the devastating diagnosis: stage 4 ovarian cancer. She was 36. Buckfire, an artist, fought cancer for five years before she died in 2010. Now, her family has established a free art camp for kids in her memory. Planet Lori Art Camp will run August 25-29 at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. It’s specifically for children who have experienced or are experiencing a parent or close relative fighting cancer. “Lori’s greatest love was her son, and art was her passion,” says Daniel Buckfire, Lori’s husband. “Spending days working with Hayden on art projects was the best of both worlds for her, and she passed that joy onto Hayden.” Space is still available for eligible campers. To apply, visit and click on “Art Camp” to download an application. The deadline is Aug. 18.

‘Morning Sunrise’ is this week’s winner

'Morning Sunrise' is this week's winner

Every morning, Geri Musial of Troy watches her garden come alive. Sun slices through the trees, spotlighting different portions of the garden each morning. Musial says her garden has been a labor of love over the past 26 years. Once scrubby with bushes and weeds, it now blooms with begonias, ferns and hostas. “As with any area under trees, it’s been trial and error as to what will grow,” says Musial. “But I think I have found some nice combinations that work.” Musial’s photo, “Morning Sunrise,” is this week’s winner of the Homestyle garden photo contest. She’ll win a home or garden book; she also be a finalist for the grand prize at the end of the summer, a $100 English Gardens gift card. To enter your garden photo, go to Or mail them to Homestyle Garden Photo Contest, 615 W. Lafayette, Detroit, MI 48226.
