Here’s what you need to know:

■ Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter was out of the lineup a day after fouling a ball off his foot against the Indians.

■ Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez was named the American League Player of the Month for August. Martinez batted .350 (41-for-117) during the month, scoring 20 runs over 31 games while recording five doubles, six home runs and an AL-leading 30 runs batted in.

This is the first player-of-the-month honor for Martinez, who also had a league-high-tying 41 hits in August. The last Tiger to win the award was Miguel Cabrera in August 2013.

■ Max Scherzer, Thursday’s Tigers starter, is 5-0 in his previous nine starts against the Indians, with a 3.71 earned-run average and 60 strikeouts.

■ The Tigers are 4-3 entering the final matchup of an eight-game trip. They return home Friday to start an interleague series against the Giants.
