Miami blew out the Pistons 110-95 Sunday, but the Pistons left a lasting impression the past week by winning a game in Miami. The Heat can't take this team for granted anymore. This is not a guaranteed victory during an 82-game mindless odyssey that leaves teams breathless and physically spent some nights.
How did we get here? Why is Eastern Michigan football so awful that people want to get rid of it? Football solves all problems everywhere else. It boosts student enrollment at other schools.
In the grand scheme of things it matters little. The Pistons smacked around a Sixers team that has given up an average of 112.7 points in a nine-game road losing streak. After a hot start the Sixers (6-12) are taking their rightful spot as one of the NBA's bottom feeders.
Al Fracassa was happy and sad and ready to walk away Friday, even though he admitted if he were a few years younger, he'd give it another try.
The first time you get punched in the stomach, it hurts. The 100th time you get punched in the stomach you kind of shrug it off and go about your business.
In the last 18 seasons, Eastern Michigan is 69-197-1. The Eagles last won a Mid-American Conference title in 1987 when they were known as the Hurons. A few years earlier the school snapped a 27-game losing streak.
Drummond and Pacers center Roy Hibbert fought for position and bumped and bruised one another in an old-school exchange Tuesday that would have made Bill Laimbeer proud.
The music was loud, the entertainment strong and the Pistons looked like a team that could be righting itself even though all of its parts are not together and whole. The Pistons beat the Washington Wizards, 113-102, Wednesday night as a new era of basketball begins.
Pistons officials hope the moves they made this offseason — namely bringing in Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith — will infuse new life into a slumbering franchise.
Sports writer & Columnist
I was born in Detroit and graduated from Cass Tech and Central Michigan. Before coming to The Detroit News I worked at the Grand Rapids Press and Detroit Free Press. I also co-host an afternoon sports talk radio show on WXYT 1270.
I've seen Detroit from every angle. I walked Woodward with my grandmother when this town thrived and watered down the roof of my house during the 1967 riots. This place is not perfect but it defines me.
I grew up reading Joe Falls and Jerry Green, and they inspired me to write commentary because I wanted to provide a different view of our world here.
This is my town and I invite you to share in my experiences by reading my stories and by daily Web log at detnews.com.
