  1. Day-boat scallops add tasty twist to caprese salad

Whenever I spy the word 'caprese,' whether on a menu or in a cookbook, I snap to attention. 'Caprese,' which means 'in the style of Capri,' is best known for caprese salad and includes three of my favorites – basil, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella.

  2. Easy dinner pasta allows heart to stay in the garden

Now that the weather has finally turned lovely, the last place I want to be is indoors. Would I rather be planting iris or peeling potatoes? This pasta dish is particularly easy and a great way to showcase fresh asparagus.

  3. Enjoy Sicilian salad as a side dish or a supper

Now that spring really and truly is here, my appetite has shifted gears from heavy meals to light suppers.

  4. Flavored vinegar makes rhubarb blush

You don’t need a mountain of sugar to appreciate rhubarb. Other flavors such as orange, grapefruit and ginger flatter rhubarb, as does the aforementioned strawberry.

  5. Sip a ginger julep to watch the Run for the Roses

In honor of jockey Rosie Napravnik and her unique toughness, I’m going to shake up a unique ginger mint julep to watch her ride Mylute in the Kentucky Derby.

  6. Effortless flan finishes off the fiesta

Flan is a Latin American treat made by pouring custard into a caramel-coated dish, which is baked in a water bath. Once removed from the oven, cooled and inverted onto a plate, it becomes a delightful dessert.

  7. What to make before Michigan strawberries arrive

Even more than waiting for the first daffodil to open or spying the hummingbirds’ return to the nectar feeder do I anticipate fresh Michigan strawberry season.

  8. Tiny taters satisfy the spud desire

Instead of a big mountain of mashed potatoes dripping with butter, opt for some tiny taters from Trader Joe’s. These little darlings are smaller than fingerlings and perfect for the skillet.

  9. Halibut with lemon and basil a great catch

I love halibut's clean, delicate and light sea flavors, and it needs very little preparation whether it’s broiled, pan roasted or grilled.

  10. Asparagus is healthy way to top pizza

I’d really be hard pressed to name my favorite vegetable. I love them all (well, most of them, anyway) and aside from being healthy, they always add color to the plate. But asparagus rates right up there at the top.
