But none of that mattered as the West squad flexed its muscles early, assuming control with a five-run second inning before coasting to a 19-7 victory in front of 1,265 fans at Comerica Park.

    It was payback time for Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett as it defeated Decatur, 9-0, in the Division 3 baseball title game on Saturday at Michigan State's McLane Stadium. Two years ago, Decatur defeated University Liggett in the Division 4 title game.

    Division 2 softball final: Livonia Ladywood falls to Stevensville Lakeshore

    Ladywood (29-14) got two runs in the first inning, thanks to a pair of Lakeshore errors. Haley Lawrence reached safely when her ground ball went between the legs of shortstop Alex Forsythe. Lawrence scored when the first baseman couldn't handle a throw on a routine ground ball two batters later, and Hallea Garcia delivered a sacrifice fly to give Ladywood a 2-0 lead.

    Richland Gull Lake won its second straight Division 2 soccer championship, scoring midway through the second half and holding on to edge Birmingham Marian, 2-1, Saturday in a rematch of last year's final. Gull Lake prevailed 1-0 after extra time last season, and the teams were ranked 1-2 all this season, with Marian getting the top nod.

    Detroit Country Day was making its first appearance in the championship game in eight years and was looking to bring home its first title since 2004. But its quest will go on as Hudsonville Unity Christian's relentless pressure led to three second-half goals and a 3-1 victory over Country Day in the Division 3 soccer final Saturday. It was the eighth state title and second in three years for Unity Christian.
