Local celebs mix cocktails for THAW

About a dozen local celebrities and high-profilers traded in their respective professional hats for bartender aprons on Feb. 6 as a part of the big WWJ Newsradio 950 radiothon to help raise money for THAW (The Heat and Warmth Fund).

Well, they didn't really wear aprons, but they did have a chance to show off their mixology skills with real bartenders by their sides at Pulse Martini Lounge in downtown Detroit, where the event, known as Cocktails for a Cause, took place.

"With the cost of energy rising every year, thank goodness for an organization such as THAW to help those who cannot keep pace with heating bills during the winter months," said David Rudolph, founder of D. Ericson and Associates, the public relations firm that coordinates the event.

Nearly 200 people came through the small, cozy martini bar to support the cause. Donations were taken at the door and a portion of all drink sales was donated to THAW.

Among the celebrity bartenders were Olympic gold-medal swimmer Peter Vanderkaay, State Sen. Buzz Thomas, After5Detroit.com CEO Kerry Doman, and author/poet Khary Kimani Turner.
