Alumni of Lions aid cause with golf tourney

Barney )

On the heels of the worst season in NFL history comes an excellent opportunity to rub elbows with some Lions Hall of Famers -- for a good cause.

The NFL Alumni Association Detroit Chapter is holding its 30th annual charity outing at the Dearborn Country Club on June 29 with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

The event this year honors the memory of former NFL players Gil Mains, John Gordy, Sonny Grandelius, Brad Van Pelt and Dave Pureifory. Proceeds will be divided and donated to the each honoree's family's charity choice.

Among the players expected to participate include Lions Hall of Famers Lem Barney, Charlie Sanders and Joe Schmidt, and former Lions Ron Kramer, Mike Lucci, Darius McCord, Tom Nowatzke and Roger Brown.

Detroit held the first NFL Alumni golf outing at the Plum Hollow Country Club in 1979. According to Nowatzke, their motto always has been "caring for kids."

The outing, an 18-hole scramble with an NFL celebrity, includes use of the driving range, putting green, locker room, special gifts, memorabilia auction, contests, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The first-place team wins an all-expense paid trip to play in the "Super Bowl of Golf" in Hawaii in April 2010. For details, call (734) 995-9600.

Crystal ball time

Barney, Sanders and former Lions quarterback Greg Landry recently appeared on "Lesson On Golf" on 97.1 and were asked how many games Detroit would win. Landry predicted eight, followed by Sanders with nine and Barney with 10.
