G.P. South's Chris Getz goes from Chicago to K.C.

Detroit News staff and wires

Chris Getz, the Grosse Pointe South alumnus and White Sox starting second baseman, has been traded to the Royals, according to several news reports.

First baseman/third baseman Josh Fields was said to be included in the deal, which will send Mark Teahen to Chicago as a potential replacement for right fielder Jermaine Dye. Dye's $12 million option is likely to be declined.

Getz, who played collegiately at Michigan, made his MLB debut in 2008, and got his first career hit against his new team.

He won a spring training competition in 2009 and was the Opening Day starting second baseman for the White Sox, going 2-for-4 against, again, the Royals.

Getz, 26, had a host of injuries this past season, from a fractured finger to an ankle sprain to the strained right oblique that landed him on the disabled list in August. That oblique strain turned out to be a sports hernia, which required season-ending surgery Oct. 2.

In 107 games, Getz hit .261 with two homers and 31 RBIs. Among American League rookies, he was tied for first in multihit games (28) and third in stolen bases (25, in 27 chances).

He was stopped for speeding Oct. 30, and the approaching officer smelled marijuana. The officer said Lincecum immediately complied in handing over 3.3 grams of marijuana and a pipe.
