As the most troubled school districts in the state struggle with funding and declining enrollment, classroom performance is declining too.
The gap between the best and worst performing districts has widened over the past three years on both the ACT test and the Michigan Merit Exam given to high school juniors last spring. While the better performing districts continue to make strides, math and writing continue to be problem spots for districts with highest rates of "economically disadvantaged" students, many of them in Detroit and the surrounding area.
Statewide, test scores have improved in math, reading, writing and science but dropped slightly in social studies.
