Detroit Public School officials announced this afternoon that the Detroit Children's Museum, closed since the beginning of the year, will reopen, only for DPS students for the time being.
DPS officials also announced that the school system — which owns the museum — broke its 10-year contract with the Detroit Science Center, which has administered and staffed the 96-year-old museum since 2010.
The Children's Museum has been closed since the end of December. Science Center officials said on Jan. 5 that the Children's Museum would remain closed until more funding was found, which drew an immediate protest from DPS representatives. They said that the school system is the only entity in a position to permanently close the museum, which relies on federal grants for much of its annual budget.
The Science Center itself closed on Sept. 26, citing insufficient funding.
