Are Tigers ace Justin Verlander and supermodel Kate Upton an item?
The rumors are flying faster than one of Verlander's fastballs.
Verlander and Upton, who have starred together in a series of commercials for the "MLB 2K" videogame, have been spotted spending time together around Detroit, according to multiple reports. Upton, cover girl of the latest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, was in Verlander's suite at The Palace last Thursday for an Aerosmith concert, witnesses told the website Busted Coverage.
CBS Detroit reported after the show, the group headed to Coyote Joe's in Shelby, which has a mechanical bull. We mention this only because Verlander's friend Frank Viola Jr. — son of the former major-league pitcher — lent his pants to Upton's friend — model Lizzy Glynn — so she could ride the aforementioned automated steed. Glynn also posted evidence of Viola's flirt-- um, chivalrousness on Twitter. The Huffington Post also reported the foursome was spotted that same night at Birmingham's South Bar.
Staff at Coyote Joe's also told CBS Detroit that Upton was "hanging all over" Verlander at the bar. Upton, a native of St. Joseph, Mich., was also spotted dancing around in Verlander's suite at the Tigers game at Comerica Park last Friday night.
Verlander, who started Tuesday night's All-Star Game in Kansas City, Mo., will have no comment on the reports, his representatives with the SFX Baseball Group told The Detroit News.
Verlander did have a longtime girlfriend, Emily Yuen, whom he had been seeing since high school, but there's no indication of their current status. If Verlander and Upton do turn out to be the real deal, they'll need a celebrity couple name. Our suggestion: Uplander.
