Pontiac — The body of a man found in a Genesee County cornfield last week is that of a missing Troy man, and he died of multiple blunt force trauma, the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office reported Monday.
The remains of Patrick Joseph Mikes, 55, missing for nearly three weeks, were found Friday in Montrose Township, 15 feet inside a field on Morrish Road north of Lake Road. Because of decomposition, Mikes was identified through dental records. An autopsy has determined he died from multiple blunt injuries to the head, and his death has been ruled a homicide.
Mikes' son, Patrick Mikes Jr., 21, was charged Thursday with open murder in the death and is in the Oakland County Jail. He is scheduled for a preliminary exam Aug. 27.
Mikes Jr., who had a scholarship to study psychology and pre-medicine at the University of Notre Dame, was charged earlier this month with using his teenage brother's credit card without permission at a restaurant and a movie theater.
Investigators believe Mikes Jr. and his father argued in the basement of the family's upscale home on Homewood in Troy, and the son beat his father to death with an object, then drove north to Genesee County and dumped his body off a rural dirt road along with his bicycle, found 15 feet away.
Police have previously reported recovering samples of Mikes' blood and DNA in the home.
Evidence also was recovered inside Mikes' Infiniti, which investigators believe was used to transport and dispose of his body.
There is other forensic evidence linking his son to the killing, police have said.
Mike Jr. had told police that he had last seen his father on July 27, when his father had gone out for a bike ride and never returned. The son did not report his father missing until July 29.
Investigators were suspicious because riding apparel, including a helmet as well as special shoes, were found inside the home.
Police also have obtained a video from an area store where Mikes Jr. was seen purchasing cleaning supplies that Friday night.
