Bloomfield Hills — The spirit of adventure combined with the spirit of giving met in a parking lot behind the Bloomfield Hills Radisson Hotel on Wednesday night when hundreds of Corvette owners gathered to show off their machines and help feed the hungry.
In its fifth year, the Corvettes on Woodward Car Show has raised thousands of dollars of donated food for Metro area food banks.
The highlight of the show, which began at 2 p.m., was when about 400 candy-colored Corvettes peeled out onto Woodward for a parade at 7 p.m. Police block off two lanes of Woodward Avenue so drivers have access to legendary M-1.
Coming all the way from Falun, Sweden, for the show this year was Kenneth Rooslund, 52.
"Corvettes are very popular in Sweden," said Rooslund, owner of eight Corvettes and operator of the Texas Trading auto shop in Falun.
Among those donating and driving were Fred Thomas and his son, Chris.
"A pretty good story; last year we came here in my 1993 40th-anniversary-special-edition Corvette," said Fred Thomas, 57, of Oakland Township.
"I've owned it for 14 years and I was kind of itching to get something new."
So Chris started looking for cars at the show that might be for sale.
"I found one and my dad looked it over," said Chris, 25, a drive train engineer.
"Two days later he bought a newer Corvette and I bought his old one."
Dad gave him a family discount.
"He knew so much about the car that he presented me with a list of things that had to be fixed," Fred Thomas said with a laugh.
"What else could I do?"
