Southfield — A teen shot by an undercover Madison Heights police officer with the Oakland County narcotics enforcement team during a drug bust operation Tuesday at a Southfield condominium complex has been identified as 17-year-old Austin Thomas, the Oakland County Medical Examiner's office confirmed Thursday.
Thomas, of Southfield, was killed in the incident that happened around 3:45 p.m. at the Cornerstone Village Condominium complex on Greenfield Road, north of Nine Mile.
"During the investigation a suspect pulled a weapon on one of the undercover NET officers and placed the weapon to the officer's head in an attempt to rob him," Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe said in a statement earlier this week. "The officer pulled his gun and was able to fire shots that struck the suspect."
Thomas was taken a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
NET is a multi-jurisdictional drug task force supervised by the Sheriff's Office and consists of sheriff's deputies and police officers from 13 county police agencies and the DEA.
No officers or other civilians were injured, police said.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit is investigating the incident. The Southfield Police Department is assisting.
