Cause of Ferndale High student's death undetermined as toxicology report ordered

Ferndale — Authorities still don't know how a Ferndale High School track team member died last week as they await results of a toxicology report, an Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office said Monday.

Results of the toxicology report ordered for Mario Campbell, 16, who died Thursday following track practice, could take as long as eight weeks.

Campbell, 16, a junior and a hurdler, collapsed in a hallway after an indoor practice session, said a spokeswoman with Ferndale Public Schools.

Firefighters took Campbell to William Beaumont Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The results of the medical examiner's office autopsy, which was completed Friday, were inconclusive.

This is the school district's second student death in less than a month. Sammuel Lee, 17, a student at University High School, was killed Feb. 23 when his older brother shot him in an apparent accident in their Highland Park home.
