Tigers' Nick Castellanos 'did well' in camp but sent to Toledo

Lakeland, Fla. — The Tigers made their biggest roster reduction of the spring so far, sending eight players to the minors on Tuesday morning.

Among them was top prospect Nick Castellanos, who said he was told he's going to Toledo to play left field.

The other cuts were outfielder Tyler Collins, infielder Argenis Diaz and pitcher Trevor Bell to minor-league camp; infielder Hernan Perez to Double A Erie; and to Triple A Toledo, catcher Bryan Holaday and pitcher Jose Ortega and Duane Below.

Summing up his spring, Castellanos said: "I did well. They told me I made a good impression. I'm happy about that.

"They just want me to keep working in the outfield, but they liked the way I looked."

When asked if he ever thought the spring might end with him going north with the team, Castellanos said, "technically, I'm still going north — just not as far north."

He added: "I was realistic about it, though, knowing that this team would be incredibly hard to make. With performing well, I was hoping they might reconsider, but I knew it was a long shot.

"You're always going to be disappointed when you're packing up and saying goodbye, but it's pretty much what I expected what would happen."

The biggest thing he's taking away from spring training?

"Showing them that I'm comfortable in the outfield and eventually will be ready to play there," Castellanos said. "A 21-year-old playing every day in Triple A, that's not a bad gig."

Nick Castellanos had nine hits in 25 at-bats for a .360 average this spring with the Tigers. / Robin Buckson / Detroit News
