Detroit —U.S. Customs officials said the scent of marijuana wafting from a tour bus in pop singer Rihanna's entourage as it crossed into the United States Wednesday aroused the suspicions of agents, who searched the vehicle and found a small amount of the drug.

The incident happened about 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Ambassador Bridge, said Kristopher Grogan, spokesman for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

"A caravan of 10 charter buses claiming association with singer Rihanna attempted to cross into Detroit … and during the primary inspection, due to the strong odor of marijuana emanating from one of the buses, a U.S. Customs officer referred the bus for a secondary inspection," Grogan said.

"During the secondary inspection, one of our (drug-sniffing) dogs alerted to the presence of drugs on one of the passengers," Grogan said. "A search of the individual resulted in the discovery of a small amount of marijuana."

Grogan said the passenger was fined and allowed to leave. He was unsure the amount of the fine.

"Each situation is different," Grogan said. "A lot of times we'll just assess a civil fine (instead of arresting the offender)."

Rihanna, whose hits include "Cheers (Drink To That)" and "Shut up and Drive," performed in Toronto Tuesday and is scheduled to play Joe Louis Arena Thursday.
