Ann Arbor — Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan was projected as a high pick in the upcoming NFL draft, but he announced in January his plans to return to Michigan.
It was a decision that caught many off-guard and caused some to question why someone would turn down millions for another year of college. Lewan has said repeatedly most don't understand what it's like to play football at Michigan.
After his announcement, Lewan said he and his father, Dave, were at a local grocery store.
"An old lady saw me, (and she said), 'Are you Taylor, that 77 fellow?'" Lewan said, adding he responded in the affirmative. "'You're an idiot.'"
Lewan said he wasn't certain how to respond.
"(I said), 'I appreciate it, thank you, Go Blue,'" Lewan said. "I didn't know what to say."
But he has had no regrets.
"I'm so happy to be back," Lewan said.
