Detroit — Michigan State Police are investigating an early morning fatal crash Thursday involving four cars in which two drivers fled the scene on foot.
The incident — which occurred at about 2:20 a.m. on westbound Interstate 94 near Chalmers Road — closed the freeway until about 7 a.m.
According to the Michigan State Police, the crash killed Detroit resident Carlita Charmaine Young, 22, who died after she was struck by a late-model Cadillac.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that a Chrysler Sebring had stopped on westbound I-94, partially blocking the right lane," said Lt. Michael Shaw, of the Metro North Post.
"The driver (Young) exited the vehicle for yet to be determined reasons and was struck by a late-model Cadillac. The driver of the Cadillac, believed to be a male in his 60s, then fled the scene on foot."
Shortly after the first crash, an Oldsmobile Intrigue slowed at the scene and was rear-ended by a Chevy Cruze.
"The driver of the Oldsmobile then fled the scene on foot as well," Shaw said.
Alcohol may have been a factor and there were no other reported injuries in either crash, police said.
"The female driver was pronounced dead on the scene," Shaw said of the first crash. "Her next of kin have been notified."
