Ann Arbor — Washtenaw County has approved 10-year contracts with five unions, a week before Michigan's new right-to-work law is set to take effect.
The law passed last year bans mandatory payments from employees to the unions that represent them under collective bargaining agreements.
AnnArbor.com reports the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners approved the contracts Wednesday. In exchange for the extended time frame, the unions agreed to changes in employee contributions to retirement and health care benefits for some workers.
Contracts include wage increases for the units that negotiated with the county.
Negotiations began a month ago after the Board of Commissioners passed a formal resolution condemning right-to-work and directing county administration to begin negotiating union contracts. The deals mean unions are expected to get dues for the next 10 years.
