Taylor High school senior girls and female staff at a Taylor charter school took a free self-defense class Friday.
The event at Trillium Academy was offered by Kevin Krause, owner of Bad Day Tactical, a Royal Oak self-defense and concealed pistol training company. Krause said young women need to learn how to defend themselves against assault.
"These girls are at an age where they're too young to take concealed weapons training, and they can't carry Tasers, so we felt they were a demographic not being addressed," said Krause. "This is the first class we've taught like this and hope to be able to reach out to other districts if we can secure a grant."
He said it's important girls learn to use their natural weapons — hands and feet. He also taught the girls the "rape escape."
"If someone has a girl pinned down on the ground, we show how to stop them," he said.
Krause emphasized the need to pay attention to one's surroundings. "The idea is to be aware and alert so you can try to avoid a confrontation."
