"State track meets are always very exciting to watch," said Brooke Ventimiglia of Warren. "You get to witness some of the fastest athletes in the country compete!"

Her photo of the joyful reaction of Novi High School's 4x400 meter relay team at this year's Division 1 championships was named a finalist this week in The Detroit News' Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest.

"As this last runner from Novi came through the finish line, she pointed at the clock with a confused/excited look on her face," Ventimiglia said. "No words could come out of her mouth. Not only did they place third in the state, but they had defeated their school's long-running school record. They immediately embraced and I got to share in the moment. What a great day it was!"

The Celebrate Michigan Photo Contest showcases readers' photos that highlight the unique character of Michigan and its inhabitants. Other finalists named this week are Charles Dodds of Detroit, Karl Otto of Ypsilanti, Alison Peruski of Clawson and Mudg Poster of West Bloomfield.

Each Thursday through Aug. 15, five more entries will be chosen that will become eligible for prizes to be announced Aug. 23. The prizes are:

First place: A two-night stay at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, including two breakfasts and two dinners.

Second place: A package valued at $250 from the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau that includes an overnight stay in Lansing and a Visa gift card.
