When I was single, I found a recipe for a decadent, moist chocolate cake with coffee liqueur in it that I rechristened “Man-Catching Cake.” Never did snag a guy with it; come to think of it, I don’t think I ever made it for my would-be husband when we were courting (though I did make it for his birthday the first year we were married). My friends and family liked it, though.
Turns out I’m not the only one who files recipes by romance. During our recent Let’s Talk Food on blueberries, reader Michael Farlin of Lansing mentioned a recipe for “Blueberry Boy Bait” cake that his mother, Naomia Farlin, had written down and used since the early 1960s.
An avid recipe lover who collected them from newspapers, magazines, friends and neighbors regularly, Naomia Farlin didn’t note anything as to the origin of this one, her son says, but she did write a note on the bottom:
“Recipe is a good one to use to ‘snag’ a future boyfriend or husband.”
I love that little throwback. In any case, this cake sounds delightful for anyone; Michael Farlin says he uses the recipe to this day, and that it’s quick and easy to make.
Blueberry Boy Bait
One thing I really like about this recipe: it works with fresh OR frozen blueberries, making it an any-season winner. And I never think of cinnamon with blueberry; I bet this would be nice for a breakfast coffee cake, too. Courtesy Michael Farlin.
Cake topping ingredients:
3 tablespoons sugar
1 to 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 cups all purpose flour (unsifted)
1 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
2⁄3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup milk
3 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen; do not thaw frozen blueberries if using)
Preheat oven to 350. Butter a 13x 9 pan.
In a large bowl of an electric mixer, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Mix in the oil, milk and eggs. Beat at medium speed for 3 minutes. Pour batter into buttered prepared pan. Sprinkle the blueberries evenly on top of the batter.
Mix together the cake topping ingredients and sprinkle on top of the blueberries / cake batter.
Bake for about 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Serve plain or with a dollop of sweetened whipped cream.
