How wrong-headed was the Ted Cruz-led tea party strategy to defund Obamacare with a government shutdown? The most anti-Obamacare business lobby in the country is pleading for a change in tactics.
The National Federation of Independent Business represents American small business and has been synonymous with conservative efforts to repeal Obamacare since it unsuccessfully argued before the Supreme Court in 2012 to repeal the law’s individual mandate. Yet, the NFIB has joined establishment, big business trade lobbies like the National Association of Manufactures and the National Retail Federation in urging GOP leaders to reject a shutdown strategy that now threatens a U.S. debt default.
“The interests of the business community are clearly not a priority for some members of Congress at this point,” says NFIB President Dan Danner. “While we agree with these folks on policy — we think Obamacare is a terrible law — it’s clear that their tactics are not getting us where we need to go in terms of more economic certainty.”
Obamacare needs an overhaul. But the way to win the battle is not to lead Republicans into a box canyon without an exit strategy.
Student safety must be top priority
The Michigan House Education Committee has sent to the House floor two bills that literally could save the lives of students who are having an allergic reaction to food while in school. The bills would require placing inexpensive epinephrine injectors in Michigan schools and training staff to use them. This life-saving regulation makes sense because of the wide variety of allergies affecting students these days.
Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, can be fatal within minutes through swelling that shuts off airways or rapidly drops blood pressure.
Epinephrine injectors are considered the most effective emergency treatment for anaphylaxis. The injectors immediately get epinephrine into the allergy victim’s system, slowing the reaction to give emergency personnel time to save the child’s life. With more than 15 million Americans — including 6 million children — suffering from food allergies, the statistics speak for themselves. Epinephrine injectors should become a common part of a school’s first aid kit.
Service goal far from achieved
The Wayne County Clerk’s online mission statement begins “To provide and promote efficient, timely, world-class services at a fair cost to the residents.” At this point, those are empty words because officials have a long way to go to live up to this goal.
The county can’t even provide residents with basic, online information about the Nov. 5 election. As of Wednesday, the most recent voting information available on the county’s website discusses the candidates and ballot issues for the two-month-old Aug. 6 primary election.
Neighboring Oakland and Macomb counties have complete lists of who the candidates are and what issues are on the general election ballots of every community.
Wayne County is in financial trouble, highlighted by the jail construction boondoggle, which is hundreds of millions of dollars over budget. But where’s the simple service bragged about in the clerk’s mission statement? Citizens deserve better.
