Hamtramck—Two teenage boys were charged Tuesday in the beating of a homeless man in the Detroit enclave.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged 14-year-old De’Vante Howard, of Hamtramck and Martell Dewberry, 13 of Detroit, with the beating of a homeless man on Saturdayin the 2300 block of Danforth Street where the man has been known to live.
The 55-year-old victim, known affectionately in Hamtramck as “Casper”, was allegedly beaten by the teens around 11 p.m. Saturday. The man, whom police would not identify, is a long time Hamtramck resident and known for taking care of stray cats in his neighborhood.
The man remains in critical condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital with numerous injuries.
No motive has been established in the attack, said Hamtramck Police Chief Max Garbarino Tuesday.
“It’s a pretty horrific crime,” said Garbarino. “My officers all know (the victim) and they’re taking this personal.”
The teens are being charged as adults and face one count of assault with intent to commit murder.
The teens are expected to be arraigned Tuesday in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center.
