The Red Wings have sent backup goaltender Petr Mrazek to Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League, which appears to signal Jimmy Howard’s return from a sore left (catching) hand.
Jonas Gustavsson started in place of Howard in the Wings’ last two victories over Boston and Columbus this week.
Mrazek, who backstopped Grand Rapids to the AHL Calder Cup championship last season, had not appeared in any Wings games. He is 1-0 with a 2.77 goals-against for the Griffins.
