Sometimes the lights might shine too bright for young players on the big stage, but not Birmingham Roeper freshman Simon Reonnecke.
Reonnecke notched two goals and an assist to lead No. 7-ranked Roeper past league foe Ann Arbor Greenhills, 3-0, in a Division 4 boys soccer regional semifinal Tuesday night at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
Roeper (18-4) will play Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett in a regional final 7 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Foley. It is Roeper’s first time reaching a regional final since 2005.
Reonnecke opened the scoring off an assist by Mo Huurdeman in the 21st minute from five yards out. Four minutes later, Reonnecke struck again as Greenhills’ goalie was unable to corral a shot and tapped in the loose ball to put Roeper up 2-0.
Senior Max Whipple added an insurance goal six minutes into the second half, rifling the ball into the top left corner of the net from 25 yards out off a pass from Reonnecke.
Calvin Lind had 11 saves to preserve the shutout, his fifth of the year.
