Detroit — Police are looking for a purse thief who walked into five Detroit Public School buildings earlier this month and snatched the bags from classrooms.
The suspect enters a school through the main door and says he is looking for a student who is a relative, said Craig Schwartz, executive deputy chief for DPS Police.
The man will ask to use the bathroom and slip out, wandering the halls until he finds an open classroom, investigators said. Once he sees a teacher’s purse, he slips it into his backpack and leaves the school.
Police said the suspect uses the credit cards immediately, before the victims can cancel them.
The suspect is responsible for five larcenies. The crimes occurred at Noble, Priest, Bates Academy, Coleman Young and Glazer between Oct. 4 and Oct. 18.
Anyone with information about the suspect — described as a black male, 30-40 years-old, 5-foot-11 to 6-foot-1, 180-220 pounds, with a full beard and mustache, usually wearing all dark clothing and a ball cap and carrying a dark backpack — should call (313) 748-6015.
