Dearborn— Police are seeking the public’s help to find a person they say robbed a local mosque at least twice in the last month.
Several larcenies have been reported at the American Moslem Society, 9945 Vernor, police said. The latest incidents happened at around 2 p.m. Oct. 17 and about 8 p.m. Thursday.
The man — described as balding and about 5’10” with a thin build, mustache and possibly a goatee known to walk around Dix and Vernor — was captured in surveillance footage.
He usually “enters the mosque during prayer service, removes personal items from the storage shelf,” police said.
Mansoor Ghaleb, an office manager, said the man appears to target high-end footwear. Three or four pairs of shoes were taken Thursday, while two pairs were stolen last week, he said. “The way he’s doing it, he knows what time our prayer is, so he looks like he knows the area. ... Maybe people have already seen him here and there before.”
Mosque officials also believe the man is behind other shoe thefts in the last several months, Ghaleb said.
“This type of crime in a house of worship will not be tolerated,” Dearborn police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement. “The community’s assistance in identifying the suspect is instrumental in this investigation.”
