Kalamazoo — The Western Michigan University professors’ union has voted to censure the school’s provost for his handling of the ongoing issue of gender equity for female faculty.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports the vote earlier this month is designed as formal public criticism to express the faculty’s displeasure with Tim Greene actions.
Lisa Minnick, president of the Kalamazoo school’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors, says the vote is symbolic and carries no legal weight. She says union members “don’t know how else to get the attention of the administration.”
School spokeswoman Cheryl Roland said in an email the university is committed to addressing gender equity issues and the vote was a surprise. She said Greene has repeatedly expressed his commitment in recent months to addressing the complex issues.
