The timetable for Miguel Cabrera’s recovery: six to eight weeks of rehabilitation, and at full strength by spring training.
That was the announcement Tuesday after the Tigers superstar underwent successful morning surgery in Philadelphia to repair core muscles in his abdominal area.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Bill Meyers, a nationally-known specialist in athletic injuries of the kind Cabrera dealt with during a pain-loaded 2013 season. His most difficult weeks included the Tigers’ playoff series when their third baseman, and American League batting champion, was diminished at the plate and on the basepaths.
Cabrera is regarded as the front-runner to win his second consecutive American League Most Valuable Player award. The winner will be announced Nov. 14.
