East Lansing — Michigan State's defense is living up to its lofty billing early in its matchup with Michigan.
Despite giving up a pair of big pass plays early, the Spartans are pressuring Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner, specifically defensive end Shilique Calhoun.
The Spartans have racked up four sacks in the first quarter and Calhoun has been part of three, getting credited with 2.5 sacks. He was helped out on the first one by linebacker Denicos Allen. Linebacker Ed Davis also has a sack.
Michigan State entered the game with 18 sacks while Calhoun had four. The Spartans closed the first quarter by forcing two straight three-and-outs by the Wolverines.
