Allen Park — Devonte McGregor ran for 168 yards and three touchdowns and Taylor Truman took advantage of six Allen Park turnovers in a 36-19 victory Friday night in a Division 2 pre-district game.
The loss snapped Allen Park’s five-game winning streak and gave Truman its third playoff win in school history and another shot against Wyandotte Roosevelt next week for the district title.
Truman knocked off Allen Park in the same fashion last season before falling to Wyandotte in the finals.
While the anticipation was high, it’s hard to win any football game with six turnovers, Allen Park coach Tom Hoover said.
“Every time we got something going we turned it over,” said Hoover, whose team had four giveaways in the first half.
It would not be incorrect to say that Truman ran the ball down Allen Park’s throat.
Truman rushed for 245 yards and four touchdowns in the first half and never threw a pass in the game.
Donavin Rubens ran for a 57-yard touchdown on the third play of the game. Allen Park responded by throwing an interception on its second play from scrimmage. That set the tone for the rest of the game.
Jake Barann’s one-handed, 29-yard catch set up Allen Park’s first score, and Manny Andrade ran 5 yards for the touchdown in the first half.
Two penalties, including a pass interference call in the second half, set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Allen Park’s Richard Gamble.
“They made some good adjustments ... but toward the end we made big defensive stops,” Truman coach Eric Stiegel said.
Allen Park would score once more in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to match Truman’s offense.
