High school football picks: Scoreboard should be buzzing for Melvindale vs. St. Clair

Melvindale — As playoff games go, the Division 3 regional final between Melvindale and St. Clair is expected to be one of the highest scoring games this weekend.

Melvindale (9-2) averages better than 33 points, St. Clair sits at just over 49.

“It’ll be a challenge,” Melvindale coach Jason Carriveau said of Friday night’s game against St. Clair at East China Stadium. “They run the triple option based out of the I-formation, but they also run the midline. They want the ball in the hands of their quarterback (Jared Tobey).”

Strength of schedule seems to favor Melvindale — all its opponents but one (Milan) are Class A schools. St. Clair has played six Class A schools.

And a plus for Melvindale is the status of slot back KleSean Clark. Clark suffered a sprained ankle in the first week of the playoffs, and though he wasn’t completely healthy last week, had a 67-yard touchdown reception.

The pick: St. Clair by 2.
